Whilst the sexual revolution of the sixties represented freedom surrounding sex, the 21st century has become a little more complicated.
Our modern day Internet addiction has resulted in access to explicit material that few of us could ever have imagined.
Heide McConkey is an expert in sexually addictive behaviour and believes that readily accessible pornography is changing our sexuality, changing it from something we discover to something we mimic.
She sees clients where pornography has become such a central focus for sexual arousal they no longer seek intimacy from their partner.
‘The need for partner intimacy is diminished, which then leads to the partner feeling neglected and insecure’.
She says pornography is a greater problem for men due to their greater need for visual stimulation.
‘The pornography industry has failed women somewhat as they don’t cater to women’s need for relationship’.
